Summer School Requirements

A student must pass every course taken in a given year to be promoted to the next grade level. Every failure must be passed in summer school or through a tutoring arrangement. No student may carry a failure from one year to the next.

Summer school is required for those who need to pass a course for promotion. You are only eligible to take up to 2 courses over the summer. If you fail 3 or more courses you could be asked to transfer from Kennedy Catholic. (Seniors failing 2 or more courses at the end of the year will be asked not to walk in graduation ceremonies.)

Many school districts are not offering summer school. If you must go to summer school, you must get the principal to sign a summer school form after picking up your report card on the last day of school. You then bring the principal's form to the academic institution you will be attending over the summer. If your home school district is offering summer school there will not be a charge to attend (including Yorktown Boces if you reside in Northern Westchester.) If your home school district is not offering it and you must attend a school outside your district there will be a fee charge by that school; you must call the summer school to see how much they are charging.

If you must make up a course that is not offered over the summer (foreign language for example), then you can hire a tutor for that subject. The tutor must be approved by the principal and be New York State certified. The tutor must prove they assigned 20 hours of homework and 20 hours of class assignments. They must also send a copy of a final exam with a final grade of 65 or higher. You may also take that course at a community college and have a transcript sent to Kennedy Catholic showing a final grade of 65 or higher.
